Pine Bark Extract and Pycnogenol

Pinus_pinasterOne of the most often asked questions we get is: What is the difference between Pycnogenol and Pine Bark Extract?

Pine Bark Extract (Pinus pinaster) is harvested from maritime pine tree bark. Though there haven’t been many clinical studies at this time, early lab results show possible benefits such as:

  • Pine Bark Extract may lower the blood sugar levels of some diabetic patients.
  • Pine Bark Extract possibly reduces swelling from a circulation disorder called chronic venous insufficiency.
  • Pine Bark Extract may have antioxidant properties.

The active ingredient in Pine Bark Extract is a naturally-occuring chemical called proanthocyanidins. There are many brands that contain this chemical (in differing compounds) and they all serve the same essential function.

So what’s the difference?
Pycnogenol is a registered brand name that refers to the same chemical harvested using a method patented in 1951 by Dr. Jacques Masquelier. Pycnogenol is Pine Bark Extract harvested from a tree in France in such a way that it costs four or five times as much as other brands.

Selenium linked to lower skin cancer risk

Here is some news that is especially interesting this time of year as we all prepare for spending time in the summer sun.

Scientists have found that selenium may play a role lowering the skin cancer risk. Higher blood levels of selenium may reduce the incidence of skin cancer by about 60%, according to an eight-year community-based follow-up study.

Writing in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, the researchers report that the mineral was associated with reduced risks of both basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

It’s estimated that more than one million new cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. In fact, the number of new cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer appears to be increasing every year while the number of new cases of melanoma has stayed about the same since the 1990s.

Experts Say You Can Stop Cancer

According to a registered dietitian and a nutrition adviser for the American Institute for Cancer Research, between 27 and 49 percent of people think preventing cancer is impossible or highly unlikely.

But the institute has identified three steps people could take to dramatically affect the chances of developing cancer:

– Eat a mostly plant-based diet.
– Maintain a healthy weight.
– Exercise regularly.

About one-third of cancers can be prevented with these changes. And if you add tobacco prevention, which reduces about 30 percent of cancers, over half of today’s cancers could be prevented, according to the institute.
